Hi all, let me introduce myself in this first post by claiming that I am Colin Drummond, the number one paparazzi on the east coast! God says if you believe something then claim it. As I explained in my About Page this blog will totally take you in the life of how a paparazzi lives, eats, and gets paid. I will be giving you my daily rundown on what I’m doing for the day and occasionally give you a few old stories that pops up in my brain of certain celebrities & politicians that you’ll find interesting.
I work regularly in Washington D.C. sometimes in New York and if the money is right, I take trips to try and get exclusive photos on a celebrity somewhere outside of NY, LA or DC. You will here that word *exclusive* a lot, and what that means for a paparazzi is that nobody else has the same photo that we just got so it allows us to sell it at a higher price to the magazines or T.V. shows. When it’s not *exclusive* and there are so many other paparazzi with the same photos of a certain celebrity that day, the price goes down and most magazines can negotiate a cheaper price.
I have to let you know off the break, my spelling and penmanship is atrocious. So all you ivy league book worms, this is not the blog for you. I write this blog to try and give people a different perspective of what we do and how so many times we are misrepresented in the media and made out to look like a bunch of thugs running around with cameras stalking celebrities when that is not the case. I can say there are times when a story is so huge that many of us paparazzi do go over board, but then again when a story is huge in the main media you see the same exact thing, sometimes even worse.
Most people that I talk to are always intrigued as to how we get our information, I will be honest here, it’s usually basic public information or following a person’s usual habits. Most celebrities & politicians are just like us, they eat at the same restaurants they can afford, get driven in SUV’s (O.K. most of don’t own SUV’s), and stay at the same hotels whenever they visit a certain city. It’s weird but 90% of the time I know that if Oprah Winfrey is in New York, she’ll stay at the Four Seasons Hotel, if George Clooney is in D.C. he’ll go to this certain Thai Food Restaurant in DuPont Circle, Jessica Simpson will eat at Dos Cominos twice a week while in New York, or that if Rhianna is in a hotel, she’s not getting up or leaving till after 12 pm, where as, Paul McCartney will get up early to go walk and have breakfast at any casual diner by himself without security. These are the types of patterns that I follow, but as you know is something that’s taken awhile to learn. Before I go any further, I must admit that autograph people are really the best in this business when it comes to information on celebrities.
Most autograph people are weird and seem to display abnormal behavior, but just like most of us paparazzi, some of these autograph seekers are people with law degrees, doctors, school teachers, and even live in expensive homes but just love the thrill of getting autographs or photos with celebrities. Of course there are many that do it for a living by selling their graphs on Ebay or to stores, and we call these graphers, dealers. Make no mistake though, they have all been in the business for a long time and know a great deal of information. Nowadays there are even a new crop of fans who chase around Justin Bieber or the latest boy band and these girls are about there business, they can tell you what time Bieber is coming out the hotel, what car the band will be picked up in, and even where the group will be going to eat lunch at.
I will pick up on this conversation later as today I am preparing to go after the football player Steve Smith from the Carolina Panthers. Usually I wouldn’t do this, but today I’m going for video since there is a good story out today about a football coach who pays his players cash after every game if they knock the opposing player out of a game. Steve Smith is an all-star player so if I can get him to speak on it, it’s a good chance I can sell the video to either ESPN or TMZ, depending on what he say’s.
